Ipsun Solar Chosen as Part of Historic Fairfax County Solar PPA Initiative

December 13, 2019, Fairfax, VA- Ipsun Solar is proud to be a part of Fairfax County’s Solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) initiative, the largest solar PPA ever awarded by a county in Virginia. The contracts have the potential to install solar panels on 113 county sites including 87 Fairfax County Public Schools, many of which are within a few miles of the Ipsun warehouse at the Mosaic District in Fairfax VA.

Altogether, the projects could generate up to 1.73 million megawatt hours of electricity, equivalent to the electricity used by 213,680 homes in one year. In terms of greenhouse gas reductions, the contracts have the potential to avoid the emission of more than 1.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.

Herve Billiet, Ipsun’s CEO, said, “We have been a part of Fairfax County’s efforts to go solar for many years and it’s great to see this historic project come to fruition. From our participation in the county’s Solarize NOVA program to installing solar on many homes and churches in the county, we’ve been impressed with Fairfax’s push to increase renewable energy. We look forward to working on this great initiative.”

The initiative promises to bring economic benefit to Fairfax County along with the climate benefits. Scott Sklar, Adjunct Professor at George Washington University and Director of GWU's Environment & Energy Management Institute (EEMI) hailed the action by Fairfax County as "an historic prime mover to address the next stage of economic growth in the Old Dominion, a bold move to significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions, and a smart move to reduce school energy costs and reduce taxes.”

Bob Lazaro, Executive Director for the Northern Virginia Regional Commission, added that he is pleased that the project is a win-win for the county. “NVRC applauds our local government partners in Fairfax County on this historic level of commitment to solar,” he said.  “This initiative is great for jobs, saving taxpayers hard earned tax dollars and great for sustainability in the fight against climate change.”

Billiet agreed, adding that he is pleased to see Fairfax County leading the way. “We are thrilled that the county has engaged in this historic project that will add many high-quality jobs to our region and save money for our community. Most important, this is the kind of bold action we need to get our county, our state and our planet to 100% renewable energy as fast as possible, so we can leave our kids with a livable climate. Fairfax is one of the biggest counties in the U.S., so we’re hoping other municipalities will see this progress and follow suit,” he concluded.
