Ipsun Solar works in different jurisdictions and U.S. states including the District of Columbia. States all require different licenses to operate in their state and jurisdiction. Virginia requires solar energy companies to have a specific license together with being a General Contractor.
Virginia has 3 types of General Contractor Licenses, a Class A, B and C. DPOR is the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational regulation and defines the different classes of a licenses that determines what, if any, monetary restrictions are placed on the size of contracts or projects you may perform. A Class C license is restricted to contracts/projects that are less than $10,000, with the total amount of all contracts/projects performed in a twelve month period remaining below $150,000. A Class B license is restricted to contracts/projects that are less than $120,000, with the total amount of all contracts/projects performed in a twelve month period remaining below $750,000. There are no monetary restrictions for Class A licenses. (source: DPOR)
The U.S. State of Virginia has a License that lets solar energy companies pull building and electrical permits with that license. It's called an AES license which stands for Alternative Energy System.
The official description in Virginia law is:
"Alternative energy system contracting" (Abbr: AES) means the service that provides for the installation, repair or improvement, from the customer's meter, of alternative energy generation systems, supplemental energy systems and associated equipment annexed to real property. This service does not include the installation of emergency generators powered by fossil fuels. No other classification or specialty service provides this function. This specialty does not provide for electrical, plumbing, gas fitting, or HVAC functions.
This AES specialty license combined with a Class A General Contractor license allows us to pull electrical and building permits in the entire State of Virginia.
Fairfax Country, Arlington County and many other counties allows the use of an AES specialty license to pull building and electical permits.
